New twist in Sonam Wangchuk’s fast: Wife Geetanjali Angmo put conditions, told on what conditions the fast will be broken today on July 20, she herself will take charge of the Parliament march!

Just before the beginning of the monsoon session of Parliament, the indefinite fast of eminent social activist Sonam Wangchuk in Delhi regarding education reforms has taken a new and very interesting turn. Wangchuk has not broken his fast even two days after being admitted to Safdarjung Hospital. Meanwhile, his wife Geetanjali Angmo has made it clear that only if the MPs and leaders of various political parties reach the hospital and give a written or concrete assurance that they will raise the issue of ‘education accountability’ and improvement in the country’s education system prominently within the Parliament, then only Wangchuk will consider ending his fast on July 20. If seen from a reporter’s perspective, this movement has now become a direct test to test the intentions of political parties on the threshold of Parliament.

Sonam Wangchuk posted these 3 big conditions on ‘X’

Sonam Wangchuk from Safdarjung Hospital made her demands public on the social media platform ‘X’ and wrote that she is ready to break her fast on July 20, provided the following conditions are met:

• Government should take responsibility: The government should accept moral responsibility for the major failures in the country’s education system in recent times, large-scale paper leaks and irregularities in examinations.

• Permission for Parliament march: Wangchuk and his fellow protesting leaders should be allowed to reach Parliament peacefully, where MPs from different parties should give them open assurance of raising their voice in Parliament.

• Trust me by coming to the hospital: If he himself is unable to go out due to health reasons or any other restriction, then leaders of various parties should come to the ward of Safdarjung Hospital and assure him of this.

• Freedom from detention: Wangchuk alleged that he has been kept under illegal detention in the hospital, where his freedom of movement, speech and interaction with people is restricted. They should be freed from this immediately.

Wife Geetanjali will lead the Parliament march in place of Wangchuk

The strategy regarding the proposed big Parliament march in Delhi on Monday has changed. Sonam Wangchuk herself will not be able to participate in this march as she is under strict supervision of doctors in the hospital. In his absence, his wife Gitanjali Angmo will take charge of the movement. Gitanjali said that the voice of the movement will not be allowed to weaken at any cost. He has made a special appeal to the students, youth and parents coming to participate in the Jantar Mantar and Parliament march that they should maintain peace at all costs and not be a part of any kind of provocative action or politics. He told that Wangchuk is not taking juice or other liquids despite the advice of doctors, he is continuing his fast by drinking only water.

Did not get immediate interim relief from Delhi High Court

Meanwhile, Wangchuk’s family has suffered a major setback on the legal front. The Delhi High Court clearly refused to grant immediate interim relief on the petition of Gitanjali Angmo, in which she had sought permission to shift Wangchuk from Safdarjung Hospital to a private hospital. The petition alleged that during the peaceful fast at Jantar Mantar, the police had forcibly imprisoned Wangchuk against his will by bringing him to the government hospital. However, the court, looking at the records, said that since Wangchuk’s wife, brother and family members have full freedom to meet him and arrangements for their stay have also been made there, it cannot be considered as illegal detention. The court has fixed July 24 for the next hearing. Now all the responsibility rests on what stand the opposition and the government take on this serious issue of education reform on the first day of the monsoon session.
