Once again a fierce battle has erupted in the politics of Bihar regarding Nitish Kumar’s most ambitious and tough decision i.e. ‘Complete Liquor Ban in Bihar’. Even after so many years of prohibition in the state, differences of opinion regarding it have started coming to the fore within the ruling party Janata Dal United (JDU). There seems to be a complete change in the tone of the leaders within the party regarding this policy. While on one hand a big and senior leader of the party has strongly advocated for reviewing the prohibition law considering its practical effect, on the other hand another senior leader has given a sharp statement rejecting this demand outright, which has created panic in the political circles.
“Will be destroyed by the curse of women”: Sharp statement in support of liquor ban
Leaders in favor of liquor prohibition in Bihar believe that this decision was a historic step for the respect, safety of crores of mothers and sisters of the state and to save their homes. A section of the party clearly says that if this law is relaxed in any way or it is weakened in the name of its review, it will be a big betrayal of the women of the state. They also argue that due to this strict law, there has been a huge reduction in the cases of crime and domestic violence in the society, hence it should not be changed at any cost and the government is safe only with the blessings of women.
Why are voices of criticism rising within JDU?
On the other hand, another voice rising within JDU argues that despite the implementation of the law, the cases of illegal liquor smuggling and black marketing have not been completely stopped on the ground, due to which many times questions are raised on the administration and the police. Some leaders believe that keeping in mind the practical difficulties and revenue loss, some aspects of the policy should be seriously considered so that the focus of the administration remains entirely on the criminals. Due to such rift within the party and different statements coming out, the opposition parties have also got a big opportunity to attack the government, and in the coming days, this issue can once again create a storm in the politics of Bihar.
