On Sunday, the relief news for the general public, housewives and middle class families is that there has been no change in the prices of 14.2 kg domestic LPG cylinder and its price remains completely stable. Despite the ongoing fluctuations in crude oil prices in the global market and international geopolitical tensions, keeping domestic LPG prices unchanged has not put any additional financial burden on the monthly household budget. After a slight revision in the prices of commercial gas cylinders at the beginning of the month, today on September 6, the prices of 19 kg blue cylinder also remained at their previous levels. In view of the upcoming festive season, this stability in the prices of LPG is proving to be very comforting for the common consumers as well as small traders.
The rates of 14.2 kg non-subsidized LPG cylinder for domestic use are controlled and stable in all four major metros of the country. The retail price of 14.2 kg domestic cylinder remains at ₹ 942.00 in the national capital New Delhi. In the country’s financial capital Mumbai, domestic cylinder is available at the price of ₹ 941.50. In Kolkata, the capital of West Bengal, a 14.2 kg cylinder is available for ₹ 968.00 due to local taxes and transportation costs. Whereas in Chennai, the major metropolis of South India, the price of domestic gas cylinder remains stable at ₹ 957.50 per cylinder. Apart from the metros, if we talk about other major industrial and technical cities of South India, a 14.2 kg cylinder is being sold at ₹ 944.50 in Karnataka’s capital Bengaluru and ₹ 994.00 in Telangana’s capital Hyderabad. With no increase in these rates, working families are getting a lot of convenience in planning their monthly expenses.
There is slight variation in the retail prices of LPG cylinders in every city due to different VAT imposed by the state governments and transportation cost from the bottling plant to the local gas agencies in different states of India. In Lucknow, the capital of Uttar Pradesh, a 14.2 kg domestic LPG cylinder is available at the price of ₹ 979.50. In Noida and Greater Noida, which fall under the National Capital Region (NCR) adjacent to Delhi, the price of domestic gas has been recorded at ₹ 939.50 per cylinder. In Gurugram, Haryana, domestic cylinder is stable at ₹ 950.50 and in joint capital Chandigarh it is stable at ₹ 951.50. Due to geographical distance and tax slab, a 14.2 kg cylinder is available at ₹1,031.50 in Patna, the capital of Bihar. In Rajasthan’s capital Jaipur, consumers are getting this cylinder for ₹ 945.50. The rate of domestic gas in Bhopal, Madhya Pradesh has been recorded at ₹ 947.50 and in Indore at ₹ 948.00. In Ahmedabad, Gujarat, the price of domestic cylinder is ₹ 949.50 and in Ranchi, Jharkhand it is being sold at ₹ 999.50 per cylinder. Due to inaccessible roads in the hilly areas of the north-eastern states, this price remains in the range of ₹1,080 to ₹1,100.
Along with domestic cooking gas, everyone’s eyes are also on the rates of 19 kg blue commercial LPG cylinder which is used extensively in hotels, restaurants, dhabas, halwai and catering industries. Today, on September 6, a 19 kg commercial gas cylinder is available in Delhi at the price of ₹ 2,747.50. The retail price of a 19 kg cylinder in the commercial capital Mumbai is ₹2,701.00 per cylinder. The commercial cylinder rate in Kolkata has been recorded at ₹2,884.00 and in Chennai at ₹2,916.50 per cylinder. A 19 kg cylinder is being sold for ₹ 2,870.00 in Lucknow, Uttar Pradesh. The stability in commercial gas rates has come as a relief to food business operators, tiffin service providers and street food vendors, as no unexpected increase is being seen in the prices of take-out items and ready meals. Along with this, for students and working youth living alone, a 5 kg FTL (Chhotu) cylinder is available in Delhi for around ₹ 764.
There is a systematic and transparent mathematics to determine LPG prices in India. India imports about 60 percent of its total domestic LPG consumption from abroad. Due to this, the LPG contract price (CP) decided by Saudi Aramco on a monthly basis at the international level and the exchange rate of the Indian rupee against the US dollar play a major role in determining the base price of gas in India. When crude oil or gas becomes expensive internationally or the rupee weakens, the import cost of companies increases. On top of the base price, central government excise duty, freight charges from refinery to bottling plant, different VAT of different states and commission of gas distributor dealers are added to decide the final retail price for the common consumer. Under the Central Government’s ‘Pradhan Mantri Ujjwala Yojana’ (PMUY), a direct financial subsidy (DBT) of ₹ 300 per 14.2 kg cylinder is directly transferred to the bank accounts of the poor families registered by the government, making the cylinder ₹ 300 cheaper than the normal rates for the Ujjwala beneficiaries.
