In Sanatan Dharma, the fast of Hartalika Teej is considered one of the most important and difficult fasts for married women and unmarried girls who wish to get their desired life partner. According to the Vedic calendar, this holy festival is celebrated on the Tritiya Tithi of Shukla Paksha of Bhadrapada month, which is this year. 14 September 2026 (Monday) Is falling to. On this day, women worship the idols of Lord Shiva and Mother Parvati made of sand or clay with proper rituals. According to religious beliefs, due to the effect of this rigorous penance and fasting, Mother Parvati got Lord Shiva as her husband. There is a provision in the scriptures to keep this fast waterless, hence it is considered mandatory to follow the rules with utmost precision and devotion. If some mistakes or omissions are made due to ignorance during the fast, it is believed that the fast becomes fruitless and problems may arise in married life.

According to religious texts and astrological beliefs, women fasting on the day of Hartalika Teej should completely avoid these five major mistakes:

  • 1. Breaking the water-free resolution and consuming food or water: The fast of Hartalika Teej is observed completely ‘Nirjala’ (without water). During the fast, one should not consume water, milk or fruits during the day or night. It is believed that intentionally consuming water or food during the fast breaks the fast and one does not get the virtuous results of the penance. (Pregnant, unwell or lactating women are given permission in the scriptures to eat fruits or consume water as per their health).

  • 2. Sleeping during the day or night (sleep prohibition): According to the scriptures, sleeping during the day is strictly prohibited on the holy occasion of Hartalika Teej. Not only this, due to the tradition of worshiping for four hours on this night, women should do night vigil. Chanting bhajan-kirtan, Shiva Chalisa and mantras throughout the night is considered auspicious. It is believed that sleeping on this day reduces the person’s good fortune and leads to laziness in life.

  • 3. Wearing black, blue or white clothes: The festival of Teej is completely a symbol of honeymoon and marital happiness. One should avoid wearing black, blue, brown or white colored clothes during worship and rituals. On this day, wearing sarees or clothes of auspicious and virtuous colors like red, yellow, green, orange or pink is considered extremely fruitful and provides positive energy.

  • 4. Anger, dispute and use of abusive words: Fasting does not only mean staying hungry and thirsty, but also purification of mind and speech. On the day of Hartalika Teej, troubles at home, arguments with mother-in-law or husband, criticizing or abusing anyone can spoil the results of the fast. It is necessary to maintain a sense of peace, forgiveness and reverence for Lord Shiva-Parvati in the mind.

  • 5. Leaving the puja incomplete without listening to the fast story and hurrying in Parana: The worship of Hartalika Teej is not considered complete until the mythological fast story of Hartalika Teej is heard during Pradosh period or at night. Moreover, the fast should not be broken at night once the puja is over. The fast should always be broken with satvik food on the next day (Chaturthi Tithi) in the morning after bathing, donating and offering aarti of Shiva-Gauri to Brahmins or the needy.

There is special significance of worshiping on Hartalika Teej in the morning and in Pradosh Kaal (around sunset). After bathing in the morning, apply sixteen makeup and take a resolution. In the evening, during Pradosh period, offer flowers, Belpatra, Dhatura, Shami Patra and wedding material (sindoor, bangles, bindi, henna etc.) to the clay idols of Lord Shiva, Mother Parvati and Ganesha. Perform Aarti with incense, lamp and camphor and after listening to the fast story, pray for the happiness and peace of the family and the long life and progress of the husband. By doing this penance as per the rituals, all the troubles of married life are removed and happiness and prosperity reside in the house.
