New Delhi (Special Health Report): A bright and healthy smile not only boosts your self-confidence but also provides an accurate picture of your overall health. According to dentists, minor changes or pain in our mouths are often early warning signs of a more serious oral problem. When we dismiss these early symptoms as minor, we may end up needing root canals, tooth loss, or serious gum disease.
1. Bleeding and swollen gums when brushing
If your gums bleed when you brush or floss, it could be the first sign of gingivitis. Healthy gums never peel under normal pressure. Swelling, redness, or bleeding indicates that plaque is building up around the roots of your teeth.
2. Persistent bad breath (Halitosis)
Persistent bad breath isn’t just the result of poor oral hygiene. It could also be a sign of serious gum disease (periodontitis), hidden cavities, or an underlying stomach problem that can’t be addressed with standard mouthwash.
3. Sensitivity to hot or cold foods
A sharp tingling sensation in your teeth after drinking tea, ice cream, or cold water can be a sign of thinning enamel or cracks in your teeth. When the tooth’s outer protective layer wears away, the nerves are directly exposed, causing sharp pain.
4. Receding Gums
If you’re noticing that your teeth appear longer than they used to, it could be a sign that your gums are receding. Receding gums expose the sensitive roots of your teeth, increasing the risk of infection and loosening.
5. Ulcers inside the mouth that do not heal for a long time
Mouth ulcers are common, but if a sore or blister persists for more than two weeks, consult a doctor immediately. This could be a sign of not only a nutritional deficiency but also a serious oral infection.
6. Loose gums or loose teeth
Loose teeth in adults are not at all normal. This indicates advanced periodontitis (advanced gum disease), a condition in which the bones supporting the teeth begin to weaken. If not treated promptly, the tooth may even fall out.
7. Jaw pain or a clicking sound when chewing
Jaw tension, teeth clenching when you wake up in the morning, or a clicking sound when you chew could be the result of a temporomandibular joint (TMJ) disorder or unconscious nighttime teeth grinding (bruxism).
