In Hindu religion and Sanatan culture, Lord Hanuman, the trouble-shooter, is considered one of the most awakened and revered deities of Kaliyuga. Everyone knows about his glory and immense bravery, but there are many secrets related to his personal life and family about which even today most of the people are completely unaware. In the Ramayana written by Maharishi Valmiki and the sacred ‘Ramcharitmanas’ of the great poet Tulsidas, many incidents from the life of Lord Shri Ram’s ardent devotee Hanuman ji are described in detail, but have you ever wondered how many brothers Pawansut Hanuman had? If you also have this question in your mind, then you get its answer not in the main Ramayana but in the ancient ‘Brahmanda Purana’, where Hanuman ji’s family and his brothers have been mentioned in detail.

How was Hanuman ji born and what is the mythological belief?

According to mythology and Kishkindha Kand of Valmiki Ramayana, Sankatmochan Hanuman ji was born to mother Anjana and monkey king Kesari, due to which he is also called as ‘Anjani Putra’ and ‘Kesari Nandan’. Apart from this, in ‘Shiva Mahapuran’ Hanuman ji is directly considered as the eleventh Rudravataar of Lord Shiva. According to religious texts, Lord Hanuman appeared on this earth in Tretayuga for the purpose of assisting Lord Shri Ram, the incarnation of Lord Vishnu, in his work and protecting the religion. Since childhood, Hanuman ji had immense powers, amazing intelligence and indescribable bravery, and he had dedicated his entire life to the undivided devotion of Lord Rama.

Mention of five brothers of Hanumanji is found in Brahmanda Purana.

In ‘Brahmanda Purana’, which is counted among the most ancient and authentic texts of Hinduism, the genealogy of the monkey lineage has been described in a very precise and detailed manner. It has also been revealed in this ancient Purana that Lord Hanuman was not alone, but he had five more brothers. The names of all these brothers have been mentioned as Matiman, Shrutiman, Ketuman, Gatimaan and Dhritiman. Among all these brothers, our Bajrangbali was the eldest and being the eldest son of Mother Anjana, he was also very strong and brilliant. According to the Puranas, while the other five brothers of Hanuman ji chose a normal married life and lived a family life, Mahabali Hanuman took a pledge to remain celibate throughout his life and spent his life for the welfare of the entire creation.

Why is there no mention of Hanuman ji’s family in Ramcharitmanas?

Often this question comes in people’s mind that when Hanuman ji had so many brothers, then why is there no mention of it in Tulsidas ji’s ‘Ramcharitmanas’ or Maharishi Valmiki’s ‘Ramayana’. The main reason for this is that both these great scriptures are mainly dedicated to the life character of Maryada Purushottam Lord Shri Ram, his pastimes and his ideals. The main objective of these texts is to narrate the story of Lord Shri Ram, hence only those characters and events have been given prominent place in them which were directly related to the story of Shri Ram. This is the reason why the description of Hanuman ji’s family and brothers is not found in these popular texts, rather we find its evidence safe in the verses of ancient Puranas.
