The ongoing conflict within the Trinamool Congress (TMC) in the politics of West Bengal has reached its peak. Bengal TMC President Chandrima Bhattacharya, considered very close to Mamata Banerjee, has surprised everyone by resigning from all the posts of the party. Soon after resigning, he was seen with the rebel group led by Ritabrata Banerjee, which has created a stir in the state politics. Chandrima alleges that Mamata Banerjee not only reprimanded her over the phone but also raised questions on her loyalty, due to which she was hurt and took this step.

What was the real reason for the resentment?

Chandrima Bhattacharya told that Mamata Banerjee was very angry with her. The main reason for the dispute is believed to be the occupation of the TMC building in Kolkata by Ritabrata Banerjee’s rebel group. Mamata Banerjee believed that Chandrima’s negligence was behind this, due to which she held Chandrima directly responsible. Chandrima, who held important ministries like Finance and Health, and who stood firmly with Mamata even during the difficult phase of Bengal elections, could not tolerate this ‘distrust’. Interestingly, his son Saurav Basu has already joined the rebel group, and now Chandrima herself joining the rebel camp is a big blow for TMC.

Open challenge to Mamata Banerjee’s rebels

Amidst this chaos in the party, Mamata Banerjee broke her silence for the first time through Facebook Live and lashed out at the rebels. Mamta clearly accused the rebel group of working at the behest of BJP and conspiring to break the party. Challenging the rebels, Mamata said, “If they have courage then instead of playing games secretly, they should directly join the BJP and fight me.” Mamta also made it clear that she will make the ‘Martyrs’ Day Rally’ of July 21 successful at any cost. He said that people can leave the party, but this does not destroy any institution.

What will happen next in TMC?

To stop this ongoing crisis in the party, Mamata Banerjee has taken command in her own hands. Due to senior leader Subrata Bakshi being unwell, Mamata will now hold the dual responsibility of party president as well as state president. Mamta has assured her supporters that she is not going to bow down despite any administrative or political hurdles. At the same time, after Chandrima Bhattacharya joining the rebel group, it will be interesting to see whether Trinamool Congress is able to stop its internal disintegration or if more big faces can leave the party in the coming days.
