The political turmoil in the country has reached its peak regarding the historic reform ‘One Nation, One Election’, which will completely change India’s democratic and electoral system. PP Chaudhary, Chairman of the High Level Joint Committee of Parliament, has made a very shocking and big claim in Goa. According to the chairman of the committee, about 99 percent of the civil organizations and experts whose opinions have been taken so far during the countrywide tours have strongly supported this mega proposal. The main objective of this ambitious scheme of the Central Government is to end forever the huge economic loss of about ₹ 7 lakh crore caused to the country due to elections held in different states every year and administrative deadlock.

The parliamentary committee is currently closely reviewing the historic bills related to holding simultaneous elections. The primary focus of the committee is to create a foolproof constitutional system through which the assembly elections of all the states of the country can be held simultaneously along with the Lok Sabha elections of the year 2029. Giving detailed information, Chairman PP Chaudhary said that the committee has so far completed an intensive tour of many major states and union territories including Uttar Pradesh, Gujarat, Karnataka, Maharashtra, Himachal Pradesh, Uttarakhand, Punjab, Haryana and Delhi. During these visits, intensive discussions have been held with constitutional experts, civil organizations, Vice Chancellors, academicians and common enlightened citizens, where the idea has received unprecedented public support. The committee is now preparing a universal formula which can be easily accepted by all the political parties of the country.

Meanwhile, senior Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader and MP Anurag Thakur has termed the historic move as a real ‘game changer’ for the Indian economy and development. Giving the example of Goods and Services Tax (GST), he said that just as the system of ‘One Nation, One Tax’ completely changed the revenue and business structure of the country, in the same way holding simultaneous elections will make the governance of the country more effective and transparent. Thakur stressed that frequent elections and implementation of the Model Code of Conduct have a hugely negative impact on states’ revenues, government infrastructure projects, justice system, education and health services. This new system will not only save time and resources, but will also increase foreign investment in the country and create new employment opportunities.

Under this mega-campaign, the Parliamentary Committee has formally started the very important discussion on the Constitution (129th Amendment) Bill, 2024 with Goa Chief Minister Pramod Sawant and his entire cabinet members. In this high level meeting, detailed views were sought on the practical challenges coming in the way of holding simultaneous elections in the coastal state of Goa, deployment of security forces and management of financial resources. PP Choudhary clarified that this conversation with the Chief Minister and Cabinet Ministers was completely focused on how to effectively implement this system on the ground without any constitutional crisis at the local level and how to create a strong democratic balance between all the parties.
