According to the Vedic calendar, on this festival celebrated every year on the full moon date of the month of Sawan, sisters tie Rakshasutra on their brother’s wrist and wish for his bright future, long life and happiness and prosperity. According to religious beliefs and classical law, on the day of Rakshabandhan, when a sister ties Rakshasutra on the brother’s wrist, there is a special rule to tie three knots in it. According to the belief of “Tridev Raksha Kurvantu Sarvada”, these three knots represent the supreme trinity of Hinduism—Brahma, Vishnu and Mahesh. These three knots have their own distinct and very deep spiritual significance:

• First knot (symbol of Lord Brahma): This knot is dedicated to Lord Brahma, the creator of the universe, and is tied for the brother’s good health, longevity and continuous progress in life.

• Second knot (symbol of Lord Vishnu): This knot is considered a symbol of the protector Lord Vishnu, who blesses the brother with happiness, prosperity, stability and security in every situation.

• Third knot (symbol of Lord Shiva): This knot is dedicated to Lord Shiva, the destroyer and benefactor, and is tied to provide mental peace to the brother and to protect all kinds of evil powers and obstacles from his life.

• Auspicious time and Bhadra period: According to the scriptures, Rakhi should never be tied during Bhadra period. All types of auspicious and auspicious activities are prohibited during Bhadra, hence always tie Rakhi only during Abhijeet Muhurta or auspicious time after seeing the Panchang.

• Selection of colors: While tying Rakhi, keep in mind that both brother and sister should not wear black colored clothes even by mistake. In Vastu Shastra and astrology, black color is considered a symbol of negative energy.
