Bharat Forge Partners with Pratt & Whitney Canada to Power DRDO’s Indigenous HALE Drone Programme

Indian defence major Bharat Forge Limited has formed a strategic collaboration with aircraft engine manufacturer Pratt & Whitney Canada to evaluate integrating advanced turboprop engines into India’s indigenous High-Altitude, Long-Endurance (HALE) unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) platform. The initiative directly supports the ongoing long-endurance drone programme designed and spearheaded by the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO), marking a significant push under the government’s Aatmanirbhar Bharat defence push.

Division of Core Propulsion and Systems Integration

Under the bilateral framework, Pratt & Whitney Canada will assess propulsion feasibility, engine compatibility, and performance requirements suitable for high-altitude operating envelopes. Pune-based Bharat Forge will helm the complex engine-airframe integration, overseeing installation design and structural system interfaces by leveraging its advanced precision manufacturing and aerospace systems capabilities.

Strategic Surveillance Across Land and Maritime Frontiers

HALE-class unmanned platforms are engineered to remain airborne at extreme altitudes for sustained missions, serving as pivotal strategic assets for long-duration intelligence, surveillance, and reconnaissance (ISR). The induction of proven turboprop powerplants aims to provide the persistent operational range required to safeguard India’s northern mountain borders and monitor sensitive sea lanes across the wider Indian Ocean Region.

Scaling Domestic Defence Manufacturing Capabilities

The partnership highlights the expanding integration of global aerospace technology with India’s domestic private defence industrial base. By marrying Pratt & Whitney’s established aviation propulsion systems with Bharat Forge’s domestic manufacturing architecture, the programme seeks to fast-track DRDO’s strategic drone capabilities and reduce reliance on off-the-shelf foreign defence acquisitions.
