Apple Faces CCPA Scanner in India Over iOS 18 Glitches as Screen Repair Costs Hit Rs 27,900

The Central Consumer Protection Authority (CCPA) has escalated an investigation into Apple over consumer complaints alleging that software updates triggered severe hardware malfunctions, leaving iPhone owners with steep out-of-pocket repair costs. The investigation wing of the country’s top consumer watchdog is examining whether charging consumers exorbitant service fees—such as Rs 27,900 for an iPhone 15 display replacement—violates fair trade practices under Indian law.

Green Lines and Hardware Faults After iOS 18 Update

The probe stems from dozens of consumer grievances filed after the rollout of iOS 18. Affected users reported that their devices developed sudden display faults—including persistent green, pink, or white vertical lines across OLED screens—alongside microphone malfunctions and touch-panel unresponsiveness shortly after installing the official software upgrade. Rather than receiving free diagnostic servicing or hardware replacements, customers were reportedly presented with hefty service estimates that amounted to more than a third of their phone’s original purchase value.

Controversial Software Warranty Clauses Under the Lens

At the heart of the regulatory inquiry is Apple’s standard End User Licence Agreement (EULA), which provides software on an “as-is” basis “without warranty of any kind” while restricting its limited warranty strictly to physical hardware defects. The CCPA has challenged this distinction, questioning whether tech manufacturers can legitimately use blanket warranty disclaimers to disown liability when proprietary, manufacturer-pushed updates cause direct functionality failures on previously undamaged hardware. The watchdog indicated that transferring the financial burden of suspected software flaws onto consumers amounts to unfair trade practices.

Apple Defends Quality and Global Industry Standards

Apple has disputed the allegations of systemic failure, asserting that iOS 18 underwent extensive quality and stress testing before release. In formal submissions to the watchdog, the Cupertino giant highlighted that the probe is centered around 75 complaints—a fraction of its wider user base—and that disclaiming software warranties is an established global norm also followed by competitors like Samsung and Sony. Apple cautioned that imposing strict legal warranties on software would effectively transform technology developers into universal insurers against all digital and technical risks.

Potential Fines and Precedent-Setting Consumer Protections

If the CCPA’s investigation concludes that the warranty disclaimers violate statutory consumer protections, the regulator holds statutory powers under the Consumer Protection Act, 2019, to mandate consumer refunds, levy financial penalties, and compel changes to corporate service and warranty terms. Any enforcement action could set an unprecedented legal standard in India’s expanding smartphone market, fundamentally redefining consumer rights regarding post-purchase operating system updates.
